Why your studies can be fully funded

Student Finance England funds eligible adults — you do not pay tuition out of your own pocket, and you may get money for living costs too.

Tuition paid for you. The Tuition Fee Loan is paid directly to the university.

Money for living costs. A Maintenance Loan for living costs — means-tested, paid in instalments. For 2025/26, up to £13,762 a year (London, living away from home); most receive less depending on household income.

Repay only when you earn enough. Repayments start only once you earn above the threshold — £25,000 a year on Plan 5 (new students from 2023), at 9% of income above it — and pause if your income drops. Check current figures on gov.uk.

Ways to study

There is a route for almost every situation

It does not matter whether you have studied before. Timetables are built for working adults — evening, weekend or one-day-a-week options exist.

A first step without previous study

A CertHE or Foundation Year is the first year of university with a simpler entry route. Lower cost, lower commitment, a real start.

A full bachelor's degree

The classic three-year route to a recognised UK degree.

A master's in one year

If you already hold a bachelor's degree, you can go straight to postgraduate study.

Top up what you already have

A top-up degree converts an existing qualification (like an HND or foundation degree) into a full degree faster.

No A-Levels? No certificates?

Your work experience counts too

There are two ways into university. The second works even without the usual paperwork.

Standard entry

If you already have qualifications — A-Levels, BTEC, an Access Diploma, or equivalent international qualifications.

Entry through experience

No formal qualifications? Universities can assess your work experience (usually 2+ years), a personal statement and an interview instead.

Real example: a 35-year-old restaurant manager with years of experience but no A-Levels can still be accepted onto a Business Management degree through non-standard entry.

Common questions

Honest answers to what matters

Can I go to university without A-Levels?
Often, yes. Besides standard entry, universities accept applicants through non-standard entry: work experience (usually 2+ years), a personal statement and an interview can replace formal qualifications. The final decision rests with the university — but no A-Levels is not an automatic no.
Do I have to pay tuition fees upfront?
No. If you qualify, the Tuition Fee Loan pays your fees directly to the university, and a Maintenance Loan helps with living costs. You repay only once you earn above the threshold (£25,000/year on Plan 5 for new students) — 9% of income above it. Exact figures: gov.uk.
I'm in my 30s/40s and work full-time. Is this realistic?
Yes — this is exactly who many of these courses are built for. There is no upper age limit for the Tuition Fee Loan, and timetables include evening, weekend and one-day-a-week options so you can keep working while you study.
Is Student Finance a normal debt?
It works differently from a bank loan. Repayments start only when you earn above the threshold, are taken as a small percentage of income above it, and pause if your income drops. It never affects you like ordinary debt while you earn below the threshold.
I already have a degree from another country. Can I study again?
It depends on the level of your previous study and whether you have used funding before. Rules about previous qualifications (ELQ) can limit funding, but there are exceptions. This is exactly the kind of case worth checking personally — our consultation is free.

Important change from 2027: for courses starting on or after 1 January 2027, the new Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) removes this previous-qualification restriction — a tuition fee loan and a maintenance loan for living costs become available even if you already hold a degree at the same or lower level. Applications are expected to open from September 2026. Final decisions are made by Student Finance England — see gov.uk.

No. Admission decisions are made by the university, funding decisions by Student Finance England. We prepare your application as well as possible and are honest about your real chances.
